Hal Savar's Acoustic Soul Saves Las Vegas Entertainment

My family alone the tastes are pretty eclectic. My parents love country classics like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.  I love classic rock bands like The Doors and Led Zepplin, My wife loves new music like Kings of Leon, and My 21 year old son loves listening to Rap music and hip hop artists like Kanye West and Eminem.  Needless to say when we want to go out and listen to some live entertainment as a family it's a little tricky to find an overall enjoyable experience.

Living in and working in Las Vegas NV. You get a sense that  anyone with a little talent and a guitar can start a band and make a living playing cover songs. But as you really delve into the music scene you realize that most of the bands are exactly the same, except for a few key gimmicks there isn't really a group that sets themselves apart. At least thats what I used to think.

Last week my family decided to grab a late dinner at The Sammy Hagar owned, Cabo Wabo inside of the Planet Hollywood Casino. Just as we were finishing up our mean a young guy approached us with a song menu.  He explained to us that he was in the band that would be playing in a few minuets and that they were an all by request band called Acoustic Soul.  It really was a unique genius concept. The Song Menu has little over 300 songs from all different genres and styles of music.  The audience writes down the songs they want to hear on post-it notes and then the Acoustic Soul plays it for them in the order they get it.

If that alone wasn't impressive enough. We quickly realize this band is amazing.  They are playing their own versions of the songs we wanted to hear, doing a killer job with each one.  This had to be the most diverse band we had ever heard. They played Hendrix, they Played Cheap Trick, They Played Dr. Dre, They Played The Who, They played all our favorites including Johnny Cash! Instead of having a lead guitarist like every other band in the world,  Acoustic Soul has a female lead rock Violinist. She plays Bass most of the night but when she gets out that Violin she really wails on it! It was so cool. I can not stress that enough.  Then we find out the Drummer for Acoustic Soul is the Drummer who played with Rick James.  It was cool because they were all multi instrumentalists, switching instruments and creatively playing different arrangements on songs that typically didn't feature only four members.

The lead singer, Hal Savar was by far the best front man I have ever seen.  He sang for 4 hours straight, and his voice was powerful and soulful. He kept up his energy and was on stage singing for 4 hours straight.  This guy truly was the hardest working lead singer I had ever seen.

At the end of the evening we wanted more but the band had to go.  As it turns out the whole family was entertained.  All I can say is that Hal Savar's Acoustic Soul is going to Save the uniform and stale live entertainment scene in Las Vegas. if you Haven't seen them, check out their web site and go see them play!

Las Vegas entertainment

Casinos are the number one place for fun in Las Vegas . A number of Casinos are associated with hotels. There are many that are stand alone and cater to people at all hours.

Children may not be allowed in some of the casino unless they are just passing through to the restaurant with family. Most casinos offer blackjack, craps, poker and slots. Video poker is also available and is so simple that anyone can play it. Night clubs are another popular way to spend the time in this city. There may be an admission fee in some nightclubs and it may be difficult to get in at many of the more popular ones. Children are not allowed in many of them. Fortunately, there are many activities for children in Las Vegas .

Las Vegas is known for its Hotels and Casinos. But there are some activities that are available if tourists are so inclined. Golf is one pastime that many people cannot do without.

For those with children, parks are abundant in the area. TVs are available in most rooms with free cable and wireless internet is free in most hotels. Movie theaters, quiet eating places for seniors and people who want to get away from the noise and lights are all available away from the Strip. Shopping is also one of the entertainments that most people enjoy.

There are a multitude of options for shopping, on and off the Strip. Also, in the natural attractions such as Red Rock Canyon and in the area parks, there are Tourist centers and curio shops for visitors where they can get mementos and souvenirs.

Las Vegas Entertainment

As a boxing reporter I have now covered boxing at 47 different venues in Las Vegas since 1984 ! Thank you !

I like boxing and I like its history and I enjoy the events....this column as labeled.....ENTERTAINMENT...boxing certainly that.

Friday night on the fabulous Las Vegs strip the perfect marriage of ESPN Friday night boxing at a new hotel-casino. The perfect opportunity for the Cosmopolitan to showcase its new facility, publicize itself and merge with national TV on ESPN's national boxing broadcast. Well done ! ! Everything first class at the Cosmopolitan.... the management, promotion and facility...fan friendly unlike many of its local neighbors.

Great arena for the announced sellout of 1600ish on the fourth floor of this still sparkling $4 billion dollarish facility. They had the event live on the marquee outside and labeled it on the bottom of their pool outside where they will do an ESPN 2 encore April 29th outside....can't wait. I love the Friday night fights especially when I can attend on do replay on the video at home after the event...hate to miss anything!

Oh ya....boxing...there was some and with greatly varied opinions of its quality.
The main event went 95-95, 95-95 and 97-95 ....a majority draw with ERISLANDY LARA
(15-0-1) and CARLOS MOLINA (17-4-2) fighting to junior middleweight, (154) pound draw. The event was defensive...not necessarily bad and it was competitive without a marked edge on either side. Main event guys, in shape, skilled, made weight and had a mission...not necessarily fulfilled ! ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas who also scored it a 95-95 draw ate some crow after perdicting an easy win for the unbeaten Cuban Lara.

Still it is sad that TV and live audience members were again subject to delays because of an 18th class womens basketball game on tv prior to the event...uncontrollable I guess. Five really highliteless matches on the card....you never know in any game how it will go that's why we play the games...ask Kansas basketball team.

More to come....back here April 29th on ESPN 2...we should go just for the venue and the first class operation at the Cosmopolitan.
